My name is Rick Dior and welcome to my UA-cam channel. Several years ago, I began posting some videos for my students to supplement my teaching. I started hearing from drummers and percussionists throughout the world telling me how these videos were helping them. The channel continued to grow and when the pandemic hit, all of a sudden, I had lots of free time, so I decided to put a bit more energy into it.
My channel is dedicated to serious drummers and percussionists who want to develop the best technique and musicality possible. This is an educational channel where you will be challenged to learn the art of playing percussion and drum set at the highest levels.
Many years ago, as a student myself I was very fortunate to work and study with some of the greatest drummers and percussionists to walk this earth. My goal is to pass these skills onto the next generation of performers and to aid in the preservation and advancement of drumming/ percussion techniques.

Lead Sheet Chart Alegria by Passport
Переглядів 819День тому
Here is a Latin Jazz Fusion tune from the 1970's by the band Passport. It's kind of a disco samba type of thing. Displayed on the screen is a typical lead sheet that I get on these types of gigs. There is generally 1 short rehearsal of several tunes right before the gig and then we go. Therefore, you must be able to read this type of chart that the rhythm section gets. There is no separate drum...

Soloing Over a Vamp

Here is a short clip of a drum solo in the Latin jazz genre over a rhythm section vamp. If you are playing with great musicians as I am here, you can stretch it way out, and they will still be there. Please excuse the lousy video and audio quality as its a very live room with bad lighting. Bass-Nelson Rios Keys- Sean Higgins

Here is a video featuring the very rare Peavey Radial 1000 13" snare drum. I have not seen many of these 13" drums and I was very lucky to find this one in the same finish as my Radial 1000 drum set. I play the drum alongside the 14" version and then I play it with the drum set. My Gigging Nesting Kit

Some of you have asked me about the kits that I use for general gigging. Here is a video about that. I have several gigging kits, and which one I use depends on the gig I am doing. For small local gigs, I normally use one of two Drummers World Nesting kits that I own. They are comprised of a 20" and an 18" bass drum. For louder heavier gigs, I use the 20". You can see the drums here drummerswor...

3:16 Ravel reference!
What drumsticks are you using?
Many thanks for teach us all this techniques for the Hi Hat, and you have all the reason when you say that the HI Hat is the more important element of the drums or something like this . . . !
Maybe ,Carmine and Rick will do a lesson duet !
I don’t even play drums, I just like sitting with your groove. I remember those Peavey drums!
I am so in love with that drum kit, the sound, of course the player, but man that kit ugh....
Great book. I teach my students out of that quite often. I'm just. Amazed that you have one of those peavy drumkits. Every time I see when I think of bobby rock
This was my first drum set book after going through Roy Burns’ elementary method with my teacher years ago. I remember how exhilarating it was progressing through this book. And I loved hearing Carmine’s accent on the included flexi records. This video was a joy to watch and makes me want to revisit these exercises!
nice!
Hi Rick, As always a massive thank you for inspiring me to keep going! Just a thought... Would it be possible to do a video on click tracks? It's always interesting to see what sounds people like, whether they go for 8ths, 16ths and so on. You may already have done such a video but just in case... All very best, Tom in England.
Wonderful playing! Inspiring to watch. The book is impossible to find though. I tried everywhere to get some years back but no luck anywhere
Hi Just do a search on Realistic Rock. It is available everywhere and is one of the most popular drum set books ever.
Cool stuff!
Amazing
What about the Pearl jupiter 14x5 COB?
Amazing!
Thank you so much ! I am and will much obliged to you for remind me of the carpen tunnal. my hand is strongly pain when i squeeze my hand and use more wrist. I will change that, in a nutshell, very very very thank the experienced teacher, performer and youtuber rickdior. very thank you
Lol!
Strange no one looking for ''first'', well uh.. leaving my sincere thanks, got inspired now to do a sick drum.
This is excellent!! What is your snare head btw? Has a great vintage sound
Hey Rick, if you could do an in depth video on intermediate to advanced variations with limbs on waltz/3/4 jazz playing? I’m finding it difficult to be creative with the groove and especially with the hihat placement. I feel like it’s such a static thing that a lot people struggle with. Thanks
Excellent guys...
You are awesome thank you so much!
Where is the book available from?
You can buy the book if you contact me at rickdior@gmail.com Thanks
I would drive hours to see Rick Dior in the drivers seat, grooving live; brilliantly performing. Thank you for uploading.
But Peavey it,s a pa sound brand?
Rick you are a great Master ❤
Added to the list for tomorrow where I can listen over a better large audio system. Nice work.
That snare is cutting daisies.
I must be doing something wrong. Within a few months, my brushes' wires completely move out of the nice flat fan shape they were in when new. Is there a way to get the wires straight again?
Great video. Can expand on why you tune the bass drum to a paticular note. Here you say F. But what if you are in E major.
The bass drum should not necessarily be tuned to a note that is in the key. It should be low enough so that the pitch is not discernable. So F 2 to A 2 for a 36" drum.
Listen to the great Klaus Doldinger Passport Records ...great playing Rick!
Nice! Thanks, Rick!
Great, thanks!
Great performance. That figure you catch with the piano @3:15! Only stellar musicians can nail this kind of stuff with only one run through.
Top level playing.
So good 👍 sounds great!
What a beautiful beat!
Been around percussionists most of my early years---many were just what we called "Bangers" -- Joe Morello is the Finest percussionist Technician I have ever heard.
Whats the chart song please
I got to work as crew for this show once, its so cool. I wish I could do sit-ins with pit orchestras more often, I love watching pit orchestras work but I don't play any instruments so its always a little awkward asking, but they are such lovely people
The monkey reveal and the release of the monkeys are always my favorite parts of the show, just a perfect confluence of the music, performers, costumes, lighting, everything just goes so hard
On the punchy Peaveys! I love that kit and those FAT hats. Tasty playing as always. :)
The Acrolite is the Les Paul Jr of drums -- made by cutting corners designed as a beginner/hobbyist instrument but actually sounds awesome.
Hi Master, Which seat or throne do yo use? Thanks a lot for your fabulous videos, they are best ever
I use either roc n soc saddle throne or a spinal seat....the type with a slit in the middle. That one is round.
This is amazing! If I had a second lifetime I think I would be a percussionist, its far and away my favorite part of an orchestra when I see and work shows
Yum
Wow! Great playing, man. Bass and keys got great time, too
Great stuff
Such a tight well balanced sound for two overheads and kick mic. The snare is very immediate and full.
All great stuff, Rick. I wonder if you could say a few words about how you adjust the hi-hat stand tilter and the trade-offs of how much space you allow when you tighten the clutch on the top cymbal.
Bottom cymbal is tilted up about a 1/4 inch. Cymbals are open about 3/4 of an inch.
